Our Customers Always Ask…
At Modern Mobility, we serve customers who are both part of the Motability Scheme, as well as those who are not. A common question we get asked is ‘How do I get on the Motability Scheme?’
We understand finding a straightforward answer to this question can be difficult, so we’ve prepared this simple guide to help you through the process.
What is Motability?
If you receive any sort of qualifying mobility allowance, you can exchange it for a brand-new scooter or powerchair. Depending on your mobility allowance, you may also be able to exchange it for a suitable car or wheelchair accessible vehicle.
Each month your benefit will go to the Motability Scheme to pay for the lease on your mobility aid or vehicle. Included in the scheme, you received insurance cover, servicing and MOT, breakdown cover, and electric vehicle support if necessary.
The Motability Scheme is overseen by Motability Operations, a registered charity since 1977.
Qualifying mobility allowances include:
- Personal Independence Payment (Enhanced rate)
- Disability Living Allowance (Higher rate)
- Armed Forces Independence Payment
- War Pensioners’ Mobility Supplement
- Adult Disability Payment (Enhanced rate)
- Child Disability Payment (Higher rate)
See the full list of accepted allowances and rates on the Motability website.
Where to Begin
Whether you’re wanting to join the Motability Scheme to get a mobility scooter, a powerchair, or vehicle, the process is essentially the same.
Before anything, you need to check that the mobility allowance you qualify for is accepted by the Motability Scheme.
You’ll also need a valid ID, such as a driving license or passport, proof of address, and a certificate of entitlement from the DWP for the allowance you receive. This certificate can be anything from the Department of Work and Pensions that lists what allowance you receive, including the rate and the amount.

Finding a Supplier
Finding the right supplier can be a daunting task, depending on where you’re based and what you’re looking for. Fortunately, Modern Mobility is a proud Motability supplier for a range of powerchairs and mobility scooters, and our expert specialists are here to help you find the right solution to fit your needs and lifestyle.
Once you’ve found a suitable Motability specialist, you can arrange to meet with them. At Modern Mobility, you can see us in store, give us a call, or arrange a home assessment to talk about your Motability options.
At this stage you can see what Motability items are on offer and determine if they will suit your needs. When you’ve found a vehicle or mobility aid that works for you, you move on to the next phase of the process.
Placing Your Order
Once everything has been agreed and confirmed between yourself and the supplier, they will order your vehicle or mobility aid.
At this stage they will require:
- Proof of address, such as council tax bill or bank statement from within the last six months
- Valid photo ID
- Certificate of entitlement
The supplier should communicate to you what they need from you. As a supplier, our customers can check with our Motability experts at any stage of the process for advice and clarity.
Signing the Lease
When your mobility aid or vehicle is ready to be delivered or collected, the supplier will contact you so you can arrange a suitable time to exchange the item and so you can sign the lease.
From this point, the vehicle or aid is yours for the duration of your lease. Your supplier will be your main point of contact for things such as servicing, repairs, and any issues you may have with your item, but the Motability Scheme will also be able to help if you encounter any challenges with your item.
