When Lucy came through the doors of Modern Mobility Chorley for our 2024 Grand Opening, she had hopes of winning a mobility scooter to help her regain her independence. One of many free-to-enter competitions we ran to celebrate the launch of the new store, the mobility scooter competition had plenty of worthy candidates… and Lucy was the lucky winner!
After a nasty fall left her leg broken in three places, reliant on her mum and struggling with her newfound lack of independence, the scooter became a lifeline for Lucy and those around her. Our Mobility Advisor interviewed her to find out more about her story, and how the scooter has helped transform her day to day life for the better.
“It’s made a massive impact on my life, yeah. I can get out and about more, I feel more independent […] It’s really upped my mood. I never thought it would happen after my fall.”
Although Lucy didn’t let her injury stop her from doing certain things – such as continuing to DJ locally on the weekends – the scooter has unlocked a new sense of freedom in her day to day life. She says that it has allowed her mother to be able to go back to work, and given her the freedom to do everyday things many take for granted, such as shopping independently or taking her beloved dog out for a walk.
“Dog likes to have a walk, I can get out. I just feel so much better and relaxed and happier.”
“[I use it] two or three times a day. I go shopping on it. Fit everything in my basket, it’s brilliant. Fit my bags on here [on the footboard]. Yeah, can get like a full shop. It’s brilliant.”
When asked if she has any future plans now that she has her scooter, she told us that she is “going to try and maybe get to Haslingden on it, Charnock Richard”, and that the scooter has “absolutely” made a big difference to her life.
While taking photos and videos of Lucy with her scooter outside of the Chorley shop, located along Market Walk, many people stopped to talk to her. As a local resident that was “born and bred in Chorley”, it seemed as though everyone who knew her wanted to see how she was doing after her injury – a testament to the sense of community in the town. This sense of community is something we strive to emulate in all of our Modern Mobility locations, and we’re proud to continue supporting the community with our Chorley shop. Lucy told us,
“I feel like I’m at home. Like I’ve walked into somebody’s house, in the living room. It’s like a proper family. Can’t recommend enough.”
We hope Lucy continues to recover and that the freedom and independence afforded by her new scooter mean that she feels less isolated after her life-altering accident.
