Your Guide to Stairlifts: What is a Stairlift Easy Hinge?

Your Guide to Stairlifts - What is a Stairlift Easy Hinge
Stairlift Easy Hinge Folded

All stairlifts travel by either ascending or descending on a fixed track attached to the stairwell.

One issue that someone may face when wanting to install a stairlift is when the end of this track interferes with doorways or passageways. Not only would this potentially block access to areas of your home, but is also a significant tripping hazard.

To prevent this, you would need to have a feature such as an easy hinge with your stairlift.

A stairlift easy hinge is a foldable section rail at the bottom of the stairlift. After using the stairlift, the track can be folded up to free up space, leaving the area obstacle free.

How Does it Work?

There are both manual and powered stairlift easy hinge options available. Depending on which option you choose, you will have a different method of using the easy hinge:

Manual Easy Hinge

To manually use the Easy Hinge, you can lift the bottom portion of the track up after using the stairlift.

To make the manual operation as easy as possible, the Easy Hinge has a built-in gas spring, helping to smoothly move the track out of the way.

Powered Easy Hinge

For those who would face difficulty manually folding the track, a powered Easy Hinge would be more suitable. This allows for the hinge to fold itself automatically, without having to lift a finger.

By simply operating the stairlift from the toggle, the powered Easy Hinge will remove the need to bend down to lift or lower the track.

Why Would I Need an Easy Hinge?

If you have a staircase with enough clearance from any doorways or passages, then the rail can be used without needing to fold it up.

However, when there is not enough clearance it is very important to have a way of folding the track away when not in use.

A stairlift Easy Hinge will remove the risk of the tripping hazard, preventing potential injury and maintaining accessibility in your doorways and/or passageway.
