When you arrive at the top of the stairs using a stairlift, you need to be able to leave your seat safely.
However, if you try to rise from your seat while facing your stairs, it can not only be a difficult experience, but potentially an unsafe one too. This is where a stairlift swivel seat comes in.
A swivel seat allows you to turn the seat once you reach the landing, positioning you to face away from the staircase when you stand up.
Not only does this make it easier to get off the stairlift, but also safer, with the chair acting as a barrier to prevent you from falling down the stairs.
How Does it Work?
There are both manual and powered stairlift swivel seat options available.
Depending on which option you choose, you will have a different method of using the swivel seat:
Manual Swivel Seat
All our stairlifts come with a manual swivel seat as standard, allowing you to safely exit the stairlift seat.
Each stairlift has a manual mechanism to operate the swivel seat, usually in the form of a handle located at the side of the seat. Using this mechanism, you can swivel the stairlift seat in the right direction before exiting.
Powered Swivel Seat
In some cases, manual operating a handle on the stairlift may not be possible. That is why we also have a range of stairlifts which are compatible with powered swivel seats.
With the push of a button, a motor in the stairlift swivel seat will automatically turn the seat to face away from the staircase. This option gives you the peace of mind of being able to safely and easily get off your seat without strenuous movement.
Why Would I Need A Swivel Seat?
Without a swivel seat, you would be forced to rise from your seat while still facing the stairs, making it less safe and increasing the chance of slipping or falling on the staircase. In addition, this risk could be increased for those who may be unsteady on their feet, or have upper body limitations.
